What the top brands are now rather belatedly realising is that their affluent customers are online and willing to spend more money than most.

In a reversal of the offline world, the most exclusive companies are having to follow mass-market sites like Ebay and Amazon to discover what’s possible online. There are some companies that are holding out even now. Prada, for example, only has a few Pandora Chains pictures on its site. But for every company like that, there’s another like Tiffany & Co, which has made far more of its online opportunities. The upmarket jeweller has seen consistently strong growth in recent years. In the first quarter of this year its combined online and catalogue sales rose 14% compared to the previous year, due to both more and larger orders.

Down Fifth Avenue, De Beers, a joint venture between De Beers SA and LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, recently unveiled an engagement- ring counter. For Luxury Watches, most European high-end jewelry houses turned up their noses at diamond engagement rings. Couples on the Continent preferred colored gems and family heirlooms.

Brands such as Cartier and Italy’s Bulgari SpA were content to the firmly entrenched American tradition to Tiffany & Co., which dominates the $9 billion U.S. “bridal jewelry” category that includes diamond engagement rings and less-lucrative wedding bands. But A.Lange & Sohne more couples in continental Europe are buying new diamond rings to mark their engagements. In China, too, increasingly wealthy consumers are adopting the diamond ring as a rite of passage. The tradition has long been popular in the U.K. and Japan. “The engagement-ring phenomenon has gone world-wide,” says De Beers Chief Executive Guy Leymarie.
