zero-sum game: Clinton

October 29th, 2010

Clinton said the “the breath-taking growth and development” that China has experienced is primarily due to “hard work of Chinese people.”

She also argued that the United States, since it established diplomatic relations with China in the 1970s, has consistently supported China’s development and prosperity, rejecting charges that her country “is bent on containing China.”

“We do look forward to working closely with China, both bilaterally and through key institutions, ” Clinton said.

Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will hold an unofficial meeting in South China’s Hainan Province within the next few days, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday rejected the view to apply “a zero-sum calculation” on U.S.-Sino relationship, insisting the two countries are working together for a positive, cooperative, and comprehensive relationship in the new century.

Clinton made the remarks in her Asia strategy speech in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she started her sixth trip to Asia.

The relationship between China and the United States is “complex and of enormous consequence,” and United States is committed to getting it “right,” she told the audience in the Kahala Hotel and Resort in Honolulu.

“Now, there are some in both countries who think China’s interests and ours are fundamentally at odds. They apply a zero-sum calculation to our relationship. So whenever one of us succeeds, the other must fail,” she said.

“But that is not our view. In the 21st century, it is not in anyone’s interests for the U.S. and China to see each other as adversaries,” Clinton said. “So we are working together to chart a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship for this new century.”

The energy watchdog also said it would strengthen inspection on small coal mines for the rest of the year and ensure that the mining restructuring plan be completed as scheduled this year.

China has long relied on coal to fuel its rapid economic growth. About three-fourths of its electricity is generated from coal-fired power stations, according to the NEA.

China shut down 1,355 small coal mines with a total production capacity of 125.19 million tonnes by the end of September as part of efforts to restructure its mining industry, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said Thursday.

The latest figures indicate that the NEA had surpassed its annual target of eliminating 121.67 million tonnes of outdated production capacity this year.

According to the NEA, 1,539 small and dangerous coal mines with 121.67 million tonnes of outdated capacity had to be closed in China this year to meet the country’s requirement for preventing deadly accidents and reducing carbon dioxide emissions and pollution. residency geingwxl geilaeloxji

claim 2 million per year

Come 2025, and at least 2 million lives will be lost each year to smoking-related diseases in China, health experts have warned.

The use of tobacco by Chinese men, 53 percent of whom are smokers, has already peaked.

Every year, some 1 million people die from tobacco-related diseases in China, which is home to about 300 million smokers.

”The crucial time has come for China to implement tougher tobacco control measures, which will be good for both national health and wealth,” Judith Mackay, a Hong Kong-based tobacco control expert said on Thursday at the launch of the Chinese version of The Tobacco Atlas, compiled jointly by the American Cancer Society and the World Lung Foundation.

The number of Chinese men who smoke has decreased 3 percent over the past decade, while many other countries have reported a 15 percent drop in tobacco use, said Yang Gonghuang, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

An increasing smoking rate among Chinese women, which now stands at 3 percent, is also of deep concern, she said.

”The overall impact of the deadly habit on health will become apparent in 20 years, when the nation will see a sharp rise in smoking-related diseases, including cancer, heart disease, strokes and emphysema, which will result in more deaths,” Yang warned.

According to The Tobacco Atlas, smoking-related diseases have gradually been shifting from the rich countries to those with low and medium incomes.

Currently, Russia, China and Afghanistan have the highest smoking rates in the world, it said.

If the current trend continues, 1 billion people will die from smoking-related diseases across the globe this century and most of the deaths will occur in low and medium income countries, said John R. Seffrin, chief executive of the American Cancer Society.

In the last 100 years, smoking-related diseases have killed some 100 million people throughout the world, mostly in western countries, he added.

It has been scientifically proven that smoking is the leading cause of all preventable deaths. In the United States, major tobacco-control efforts have helped the country report a decline in the rate of cancer for the past 16 years, he noted.

Cases of lung cancer among American men annually decreased by 1.8 percent from 1991 to 2006, according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In China, however, the rate of cancer, particularly lung cancer, is constantly increasing.

The use of tobacco costs China $5 billion every year in healthcare, employee sick leave, reduced labor productivity, lost tax and premature death, the book said.

Manufacturer

June 10th, 2010

People who rely on some traditional anti-aging herb made from donkey hide gelatin may want to stop using it to avoid getting sick.

At least one manufacturer of the traditional Chinese herb failed to use the proper ingredient in E-jiao and may have put customers at risk, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

The gelatin is extracted from the dry glue pieces made with the hide of black-skinned donkeys. About three kilograms of donkey skin are needed to make one kilogram of E-jiao.

To save money, some companies have used the skin of other animals or even leftovers from hide, used for leather products, to make the E-jiao, CCTV said.

The processed E-jiao product, which improves blood circulation, can sell for up to 300 yuan ($43) per kilogram.

The report said Shandong Eastern Asian E-jiao Corporation produces more than 2,000 tons of E-jiao products every year, including particles, cakes and dates. The company buys E-jiao from Shandong and Henan provinces.

Donkey hide is sold at 30 yuan ($4.3) per kilogram, and the cost of donkey hide used to make one kilogram of E-jiao should fetch about 100 yuan ($14.6).

However, the company purchased E-jiao from a supplier in Henan Province at about 20 yuan per kilogram ($2.9), much lower than the cost of donkey hide.

The report said the supplier in Henan admitted that the raw material in their E-jiao products came from discarded hide from leather products. And nearly half of the raw materials were mixed with cow skin.

Similar problems surfaced in a company in Hebei Province, which has produced E-jiao products for 40 years.

The report said the company also uses horse and mule hide to make their products.

“The food and drug administration is investigating this case,” a worker at the company who declined to be named, told the Global Times Monday.

The report said there has been a growing demand for unwanted parts of donkey hide used to make leather products, with the price jumping to 2,200 yuan ($321) from 700 yuan ($102) a ton within five years.

The report, citing experts, said E-jiao made from the hide of other animals instead of donkey hide will work much slower and will not pose a great health hazard.

However, if the manufacturer adds a chemical gel, it could lead to illness.

“If the enterprises used a chemical gel to make E-jiao, the toxin will accumulate in the body after long-term use, which could possibly cause illness afterwards,” said Chen Zuhui, a health specialist from a hospital affiliated to Jinan University.

lymphocytic leukemia

June 10th, 2010

Green tea contains a component that may slow chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), according to a new research published by HealthDay News on Monday.

But researchers at the U.S. Mayo Clinic caution that the finding was preliminary as effect seen only in early stages of disease.

The researchers are now in the second phase of trials with early-stage, asymptomatic patients to explore the potential of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) to strike a blow against this type of leukemia.

The latest research builds on earlier Mayo lab work from eight years ago, during which EGCG’s potential to curtail the survival of CLL leukemia cells was first noted.

The current trial marks the first time this green tea extract has been studied in actual patients as a treatment option for an illness that is described as a hybrid between leukemia and lymphoma.

A total of 42 CLL patients were involved in the phase 2 trial. All were at such an early point in their illness that they were not taking any other treatment.

Nearly one-third showed a 20 percent or greater drop in their leukemia cell count after being treated with EGCG.

What’s more, almost 70 percent of the patients who had enlarged lymph nodes saw their node size cut in half or more following treatment, the researchers found.

“The benefits we have seen in most CLL patients who use the chemical suggest that it has modest clinical activity and may be useful for stabilizing this form of leukemia, potentially slowing it down,” lead author Dr. Tait Shanafelt, a Mayo Clinic hematologist, said.

Yet despite the encouraging findings, the study authors cautioned that EGCG would not ultimately replace chemotherapy. And they expressed hesitancy with respect to any current patient use of the compound while research is ongoing.

“Without a phase 3 clinical trial, we cannot make a recommendation that EGCG be used by CLL patients,” said co-author Dr. Neil Kay, a hematology researcher. “But those who want to take supplements should consult with their oncologists and need to receive appropriate monitoring using laboratory tests.”

polio eradication

June 10th, 2010

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday pledged the federal government ’s commitment to total eradication of polio in the country.

The president said this in a meeting with Bill Gates, the co-chairperson of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Abuja.

The Nigerian leader said his administration is committed to the global eradication of the polio virus.

He hailed the reported drop in polio cases in Nigeria from 256 in 2009 to just three so far in 2010.

President Jonathan ascribed the recorded success in the fight against polio to the joint efforts of all stakeholders.

The president pledged that the Nigerian federal government will do all it can to ensure the total eradication of polio in Nigeria, noting that the very significant drop in polio cases is due to the joint efforts of the three tiers of the government, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other stakeholders.

President Jonathan added that his administration will continue to do all within its powers to ensure that the goal of eradicating polio from Nigeria and the West African Sub-Region is fully achieved.

To prevent the polio virus from re-entering Nigeria from neighboring countries, the president said his administration would be willing to assist such countries with polio immunization programs.

The president thanked Gates and his wife, Melinda, for their enormous contributions to the improvements in healthcare delivery and agriculture in the developing nations of the world.
