Highlights of work report of Supreme People’s Court

BEIJING - China’s chief justice Wang Shengjun, president of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), delivered a report on the work of the SPC Friday to the Fourth Session of the 11th National People’ s Congress.

Following are highlights of Wang’s report to the annual parliamentary session:

In 2010,

- the SPC dealt with 12,086 cases of various types, down by 6.99 percent year on year, and concluded 10,626 cases. Local courts at various levels handled over 11.7 million cases of various types, up by 2.82 percent year on year, and concluded 10.999 million cases.

- Chinese courts concluded 779,641 criminal cases and sentenced 1.006 million criminals, up by 1.68 percent and 0.98 percent respectively.

- Chinese courts concluded 265,397 cases of severe crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, robbery, attacking school children and undermining national security, down by 0.7 percent. A total of 370,452 criminals involved in these cases were sentenced, down by 1.24 percent year on year.

- Chinese courts concluded 27,751 cases of embezzlement, bribery and malfeasance, and sentenced 28,652 criminals involved, up by 7.1 percent and 9.25 percent respectively.

- Chinese courts dealt with 135,679 administrative cases and concluded 129,806 cases, an increase of 6.77 percent and 7.7 percent respectively.

- Chinese courts concluded 20,258 cases concerning foreign businesses and maritime affairs, up by 0.83 percent year on year.

- Chinese courts concluded 1.428 million cases concerning divorce, children raising, inheritance and other marriage and family related matters, up by 3.45 percent.

- Chinese courts concluded 3.239 million contract-related cases, up by 2.71 percent; 578,919 financial cases, up by 11.63 percent; 14,694 cases such as merger and acquisition and bankruptcy, up by 56.9 percent, and 48,051 intellectual property right infringement cases, up by 32.96 percent.

- Chinese courts concluded 12,018 cases concerning environmental pollution compensation, up by 2.83 percent.
